Move to Cal Expo in 2020
Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn’t the Unified Symposium being held at the Sacramento Convention Center in 2020?
The Sacramento Convention Center is undergoing an extensive remodel and will close down the entire facility following the 2019 Unified Symposium.
Where will the event be held in 2020?
The organizers have secured the Sacramento Cal Expo (site of the State Fair) as the host site for the 2020 (February 4-6) show during the Convention Center’s remodel. Cal Expo is approximately five miles from the Convention Center. We look forward to returning to a brand new, fully remodeled and expanded Sacramento Convention Center in 2021.
Why can’t the Unified be held at other locations such as:
- San Francisco – dates were unavailable for 2020
- San Jose – dates were unavailable for 2020
- San Diego – dates were unavailable for 2020
- Reno – unreliable road conditions due to winter weather
- Lodi – no venue large enough to accommodate Unified’s size
- Sonoma – no venue large enough to accommodate Unified’s size
- Fresno – no venue large enough to accommodate Unified’s size
Will the Unified come back to the Sacramento Convention Center?
Yes, the Unified Symposium looks forward to returning to a newly renovated and expanded Sacramento Convention Center when it reopens in 2021.
Will the temporary move increase cost for registration and/or to exhibit?
No, we do not anticipate any rate increases.
What do the facilities look like at the new location?
Cal Expo is the site of the California State Fair. As fairgrounds, it has ample halls and space to accommodate the Unified’s needs for program, social networking and exhibits. The buildings are basic, multipurpose rooms that are heated/cooled and will be carpeted and draped for the event.
Exhibits will be in four separate halls all within easy walking distance from each other. However, for the convenience of guests, shuttles will run from hall to hall during the event.
Will there be enough hotels to accommodate a group of the Unified’s size?
Yes, we plan to contract with our current hotel vendors and the surrounding hotels near Cal Expo. Cal Expo is approximately 5 miles from Sacramento’s downtown and the Convention Center.
If using downtown hotels, will there be a hotel bridge or shuttle service to the new location?
Yes, free hotel shuttles will be provided to transport attendees from downtown to Cal Expo and back.
Are there restaurants/food places in the area to accommodate lunch and dinner crowds?
Cal Expo provides on-site concessions and there are additional restaurants in the surrounding area, including restaurants at the nearby Arden Fair mall.
Is there a plan in place if the Convention Center is not ready for the 2021 Unified?
If needed, the Unified Symposium is holding space at Cal Expo in 2021, however, we are confident that we will be back at the Sacramento Convention Center that year and enjoying a fully remodeled facility.
How will the exhibitors be affected by this temporary move?
Wait list: The number of exhibitors that will be added from our waiting list will be determined at a later date.
Priority: Priority points for current exhibitors will not be affected.
Costs: Other than the standard cost of living, we do not anticipate any cost increases. We will be working with the same union and vendors.
Space: Cal Expo will provide additional floor space, but the configuration is obviously different than the Sacramento Convention Center. Unified Symposium organizers are working with Cal Expo officials to create a logical and comfortable flow-plan for all guests visiting our exhibitors.
Hotels: Unified will continue to contract with downtown Sacramento hotels plus the surrounding hotels near Cal Expo. A free shuttle service will be provided from contracted hotels to Cal Expo.
