Damien Wilson was appointed in August 2015 as the inaugural Hamel Family Chair of Wine Business Education with SSU’s Wine Business Institute. He joined the Wine Business Institute from Burgundy’s School of Wine and Spirits Business, after having established an almost decade-long European professorial career, following his initiation as an academic with the University of South Australia in 1999. Dr Wilson’s research background started with the prestigious Wine Marketing Group, where he worked on a series of projects investigating wine consumer adoption patterns, purchasing motivations and retailing strategies. The WMG client list extended from global organizations such as Pernod-Ricard and the Fosters group, through to generic bodies and boutique wine producers. His professional and research interests have realized an extensive list of trade, consumer and academic publications. He also writes prolifically on the wine consumer journey, regionality and conjunctive labeling and innovations. Dr Wilson’s most recent publications include a journal article on cross-purchasing behavior in the retail environment. He was also quoted on the front page of the Wall Street Journal on wine tourism, and in November he produced a headline news article in Meininger’s on the paradox of wine premiumization.
